The main differences between 10kt, 14kt, 18kt gold and platinum are in their composition and characteristics:
1. Composition
10kt Gold: Contains 41.7% pure gold (the rest is alloyed with other metals).
14kt Gold: Contains 58.3% pure gold.
18kt Gold: Contains 75% pure gold.
Platinum: Is a pure metal, typically 95-98% pure.
2. Color
Gold alloys can have varying colours based on their composition. 10kt gold tends to be paler, while 18kt gold is closer to a rich, yellow color. Platinum has a distinctive white-silver color.
3. Durability
Platinum is more durable and resistant to wear and tear than gold. It doesn't tarnish and is hypoallergenic, making it an excellent choice for people with metal allergies.
4. Density and Weight
Platinum is denser than gold, so a piece of platinum jewelry will be heavier for the same size as a gold piece.
5. Cost
Platinum is generally more expensive than gold because of its rarity, density, and purity.
6. Hallmarks
Jewelry made from these metals should be hallmarked to indicate their purity. For example, “14kt” or “585” for 14kt gold, "18k" or "750" for 18kt gold, "Pt" or "950" for platinum.
The choice between these metals often depends on personal preferences, budget, and the intended use of the jewelry. Gold is more commonly used for jewelry due to its affordability and variety of colours, while platinum is prized for its durability and rarity.
Carat Weight: This measures the size or weight of the diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams.
Cut: The cut refers to how well a diamond has been shaped and faceted. It affects the diamond's sparkle and brilliance.
Colour: Diamonds are graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown).
Clarity: Clarity assesses the presence of internal and external flaws, or "inclusions" and "blemishes." The fewer imperfections, the higher the clarity grade.
Taking care of your jewelry at home is essential to maintain its beauty and longevity.
1. Cleaning: Regularly clean your jewelry to remove dirt, oils, and residues. Use a soft brush (like a toothbrush) and mild soapy water for most pieces. For delicate or porous gemstones, Not all gemstones should be immersed in jewelry cleaning solution. please consult us for specific cleaning instructions. MARK LASH offers hypoallergenic natural jewelry cleaner for sale.
2. Storage: Store each piece separately to prevent scratches and tangles. Use jewelry pouches, boxes, or a jewelry organizer with individual compartments.
3. Avoid Contact: Remove jewelry before engaging in activities like swimming, gardening, or exercising. Chemicals in pools, gardening soil, and some exercise equipment can harm your jewelry.
4. Limit Exposure: Keep your jewelry away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, and humidity, as these can damage certain materials.
5. Gentle Handling: Handle your jewelry with clean, dry hands to prevent transferring oils and dirt. Avoid tugging or pulling on delicate pieces.
6. Inspect Regularly: Examine your jewelry periodically for loose stones, damaged clasps, or signs of wear. If you notice any issues, drop in and we will gladly assist you.
7. Avoid Chemicals: Remove jewelry before using household cleaning products, perfumes, or hairsprays. These substances can tarnish or damage certain metals and gemstones.
8. Polishing: Use a jewelry polishing cloth to restore shine to metals like silver and gold. Be gentle, as excessive polishing can remove finishes or plating.
9. Professional Cleaning: Drop your items off at our Toronto or Richmond Hill location for professional cleaning, polishing and jewelry inspection.
